Project: Ideas Worth Fighting For Exhibition

Client: The Peoples History Museum

Over the years protest posters have provided some of the most iconic and surprising examples of DIY design, proving you don’t need a degree in graphic design to spread your message. The beauty and, in many ways, the success of these is through clarity of message and no frills approach. People often ‘over design’ feeling the need to a fill space when it comes to layout… not so with placards. It’s about being direct, shouting loud and delivering a hand held message or belief.

With this in mind I wanted to create images that celebrate the aesthetic and encourage the production of more placards. Protests are about change - ‘stop signs’. My placards are designed to say “Go”… get out there, stand up, get involved!” The original artwork was created by hand cutting letter forms from sign writing vinyl which were then screen printed - keeping with the aesthetic from the 1960’s and 70’s
